The first major successes in technology-aided collection of intelligence can be traced to the First World War almost 100 years ago. This presentation starts at that point, illustrating how it shaped the outcome of that war, and educated the world’s new super power, the United States, as to its importance. Experience in the Second World War, and in the ensuing Cold War, made it clear to all that technology was the key to understanding what was going on in the world and keeping a country’s people safe. This thread is extended through the strategic arms limitations talks of the 1960s and on to this very day. In addition to this historical perspective, there will be a brief discussion of the how the US intelligence community is organized and who has the responsibility for collecting various types of intelligence.
