[Legacy Report] IEEE UP Lecture on Testing and Validation of Smart Grid Algorithms and Devices
Topic: Testing and Validation of Smart Grid Algorithms and Devices
Real Time Modeling and Simulation (RTMS) can be used as an approach for evaluating developed techniques, concepts and algorithms before actually implementing in real-life power system. RTMS gives researchers the opportunity to witness, firsthand, how a moderately large power system behaves and can be used to demonstrate modeling of control algorithms, protection schemes, hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) concepts, system disturbances of various types, proper recovery actions, as well as to explain complex power system concepts. The Real Time Digital Simulator (RTDS) is an effective platform for modeling and simulation of power and control systems. RTDS hardware employs high-speed DSP (digital signal processor) chips, operating in parallel, to compute simulation results with simulation step sizes as small as two microseconds. This talk will present research activities related to smart grid modeling and building a real-time wide area monitoring and control test bed using Real Time Digital Simulator, PMU, SVP, GPS, PDC, controllers and historians. This talk will also summarize efforts going on at Washington State University related to smart grid.
Speaker: Dr. A. K. Srivastava, Assistant Professor, Washington State University, USA.
