Wireless system are becoming increasingly intelligent. Be they called intelligent, cognitive, adaptive, psychic
or whatever, an engineering challenge is how to control a system that wants to control itself! The presentation will consider some of the directions wireless systems are taking today, and the implications on control and management infrastructure.
Dr. Matthew Sherman is a Technical Director and Engineering Fellow with the Communications and Networking Solutions (CNS) business area of BAE Systems Electronic Solutions. He first joined BAE Systems (then Singer Kearfott)
in 1984 and spent 10 years working on various military spread spectrum and satellite systems projects. He then spent 8
years at AT&T Bell Laboratories / AT&T Labs – Research. While at AT&T, Dr. Sherman worked on many access
related projects including cable, satellite, DSL, fixed wireless, 802.11, etc). In 2003 he returned to BAE Systems. He
currently focuses on providing technology direction for CNS Networked Communications products lines and related
areas. In particular he has been supporting the WIN-T and JTRS product lines as well as certain JALN related activities.
He has wide ranging expertise with recent specialties including cognitive radios/systems/networks, directional
networking, Multi-User Detection technology, Denied GPS Navigation, and EW / Communications coexistence. Dr.Sherman is a member of 802.16, and Vice Chair of the IEEE 802 LAN/MAN Standards Committee (LMSC). He has participated in and led many standards activities. He has written many technical papers and holds many patents.
