PACE MEETING ENGINEERS MEET IEEE Ethics Hotline History and Future
About the Meeting: IEEE Hotline (Past History and Uncertain Future) An IEEE Ethics Hotline was established from August 1996-August 1997, as reported by Professor Stephen Unger, (Professor Emeritus of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science- Columbia University) in the 2008 Summer Issue of the Technology and Society (T&S) Journal of the IEEE Society on Social Implication of Technology (SSIT). Its purpose was to assist engineers in possible jeopardy of their employment for following the Code of Ethics. The Hotline continued for one year as above. It appears no problems ever surfaced with the Hotline. The Hotline was abolished by the IEEE on advice of the attorneys, due to liability fears. The IEEE went further and made an addition to the IEEE Constitution to preclude “the Ethics and Member Conduct Committee nor any of its members …to solicit or otherwise invite complaints, nor …provide advice to individualsâ€. The presentation will discuss the history of the Hotline and efforts to “re-establish†and continue this effort.
