In power distribution system reactive power compensation needed is usually of the order of hundreds of kVAR. For reactive power compensation, the conventional schemes reported are thyristor switched capacitor (TSC) and thyristor controlled inductor (TCI). As the VAR generated or absorbed in these schemes are directly proportional to the energy stored in capacitors and inductors, there is considerable increase in size of these elements when large VAR compensation is required. Shunt passive filters have traditionally been used to filter harmonics generated by nonlinear loads.
