Dinner Meeting of SWE – Pikes Peak Section

Time & Date: 5:30 pm, Wednesday, November 2, 2011

Location: K-12 STEM Room A327, STEM Room A327, Osborne Center for Science and Engineering (formerly known as the Science and Engineering Building) (directions and campus map attached)

Topic: Hydraulic Fracturing Overview – why we’re hearing so much about it now

An oil company has purchased 18,000 acres of the Banning Lewis Ranch on the east side of Colorado Springs and may drill there for oil and natural gas. Hydraulic Fracturing techniques are widely-used by energy companies to extract oil and gas from shale formations 6,000 to 10,000 feet below the ground. Attend this presentation to learn more about oil and natural gas production that may occur soon in our community.

Speaker: Diana Burn, P.E., Eastern Engineering Supervisor, Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission

Diana Burn earned a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering and a M.S. Biomedical Engineering. She has spent the last five years in the oil and gas industry and most of her experience has been in the Denver-Julesburg Basin of northeastern Colorado. The Denver-Julesburg Basin is experiencing a mini-boom in horizontal drilling in the Niobrara formation. Advances in hydraulic fracturing and drilling technologies have made the shale oil and shale gas plays economic and they have important roles in domestic production.

Menu: Lasagna Buffet – Mixed Greens Garden Salad with Ranch and Balsamic Dressings, Meat and Vegetarian Layered Lasagna. Served with Garlic Bread, Cream Filled Cannoli Dessert and Lemonade or Freshly Brewed Iced Tea.

Price: $15.00 per person (includes taxes and tip)
