Challenges in Managing Data Centers for High Energy Efficiency

Dr. Qiong Shen
Manager, SCADA Engineering
Emerson Network Power – ASCO Power Technologies

Abstract

Year 2013 has witnessed the continued growth and innovation in the data center industry, as the Service Provider and Enterprise IT markets respond to the surging use of Internet by businesses and consumers. Among all the concerns/challenges/trends that data center operators are confronting, there is one that overwhelms all others: the need for energy efficiency. The high percentage of data center operating costs on energy as well as the clash between environmentalists and data center operators are pushing the design and management of data centers to invest more in their energy effectiveness. This seminar will provide an overview of the data center structures, networking, operations and trends, as well as some practical insights to certain aspects of energy management in data centers: design, implementation, management, maintenance, improvements, and challenges.

Bio-sketch

Dr. Qiong Shen graduated from NJIT in 2008 with his Ph.D. degree in mechatronics-a joint program between Mechanical Engineering (ME) and Electrical & Computer Engineering (ECE) after successfully completing a National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded multi-disciplinary research project targeting at low-cost fully-automated DNA microarray fabrication. Since joining Emerson Network Power – ASCO Power Switching & Controls, Dr. Shen has been devoted to introducing modern advances in industrial networking and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) to the Power Control System (PCS) for Data Centers, Medical Centers, Hotels, Waste Water Treatment Plants (WWTP), etc. where on-site emergency power systems are required by codes or regulations. Besides his tremendous contributions to the Electrical Power Monitoring/Management of large scaled data centers Dr. Shen has been actively involved in scientific research. Since 2007, he has published 22 papers in peer-reviewed journals and proceedings of international conferences. He also co-owns a U.S. patent and co-authored one scholarly book on modern approaches to mechanism design. His research interests include Robotics and Automation for Microbiology & Molecular Genetics, Numerical Optimization, Machine Learning, 3D Printing, and Computer-Based Mechanism Synthesis and Simulation.
