Topic:
Ed Williams talked about GPS navigation. Mistakes, accidents disasters in Australia. Abstract: Aircraft Navigation Following the 1938 crash of DC2 "Kyeema" into Mt Dandenong, navigation along fixed routes using terrestrial navigation aids was introduced. GPS became publicly available in 1990; in 1995 aviation commenced the transition to area navigation using satellite navigation as the enabling technology. Transition is planned to be completed by 2016 with satellite navigation being the prime means of aircraft navigation. Freed of the constraints of fixed route navigation, more sophisticated aircraft operations are now in routine daily use with safety, operational, environmental and economic benefits. The presentation will detail the use of area navigation in optimising long haul (12+ hour) flights and the optimisation of descent, arrival and landing at airports.
