"Talk to the World": ARRL Annual Ham Radio Field Day
Amateur Radio Relay League (ARRL) Field Day 2018
IEEE was formed in 1963 by the merger of the Institute of Radio Engineers (IRE, founded 1912) and the American Institute of Electrical Engineers (AIEE, founded 1884).
You are invited by your local radio clubs to join in the multiple ARRL Field Day 2018 events scattered around our region. ARRL provided a "Force of 50" disaster responders to Puerto Rico during the aftermath of Hurricanes Irma and Maria. This group provided a vital communications resource, not otherwise available, during the early response efforts. This is a great opportunity to learn more about amateur radio and its significance in emergency communications. It is also a great opportunity to meet many IEEE and non-IEEE radio enthusiasts.
IEEE regularly deploys early responders in disaster relief. Through the IEEE MOVE initiative, partnered with Red Cross, we have a significant, valuable and greatly appreciated impact on disaster early responder communications, networking and computer services. IEEE volunteers go in as partners and as regular Red Cross volunteers--whatever it takes to support the response; and, the relationship is beneficial to both organizations, not to mention those suffering the aftermath of the event. We support the vital communications needed to coordinate the response and manage the flow of resources needed.
The Richmond/Fredericksburg Section is interested in forming a local IEEE Communications Society Chapter, perhaps jointly with the Antennas and Propagation Society and the Broadcast Technology Society with the 45 members we have that are enrolled in those societies.
Attending ARRL Field Day is a great way to meet with your fellow IEEE members and discussing the steps to improving this aspect of your membership in IEEE.
