Topic:

UWM Connected Systems Institute and applications for data driven grid and microgrids

Abstract

In this talk, the goals, mission, and tasks of the UWM Connected Systems Institute (CSI) is presented. An update will be provided on establishment of research and educational programs and development of facilities. The applications of the connected systems to microgrids in order to improve energy efficiency, reliability and power quality are discussed. The structure of sensor network, data ingestion and analytics are also explained.

Biography:

Prof. Nasiri’s work in engineering education and research hopes to enhance the educational experience so more students choose and graduate with engineering degrees. Nasiri’s research seeks to advance the fields of sustainable energy sources, grid integration of distributed generations, microgrids, energy efficiency, and energy security. He is also working to use various types of energy storage devices to support variable energy sources and loads. Dr. Nasiri is presently a professor and Director of Center for Sustainable Electrical Energy Systems in the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences at the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee (UWM). Dr. Nasiri is also the founding and Interim Executive Director of Connected Systems Institute (CSI) at UWM. He is currently an Editor of IEEE Transactions on Smart Grid, Paper Review Chair for IEEE Transactions on Industry Applications, an Editor of Power Components and Systems, and Associate Editor of the International Journal of Power Electronics. He was the general Chair of 2012 IEEE Symposium on Sensorless Electric Drives, 2014 International Conference on Renewable Energy Research and Applications (ICRERA 2014), and 2014 IEEE Power Electronics and Machines for Wind and Water Applications (PEMWA 2014).
