Proton Radiation Therapy for Cancer Treatment
Important Note: The meeting location has changed. Please see the new location!
Overview:
The potential of proton radiation as a therapy for the treatment of different cancers offers new challenges to the nuclear medicine and biomedical engineering community. These include manufacturing considerations, patient dose calculations, risk assessments, clinical expectations and determinations of safety and efficacy. The two and possibly three talks at this event will describe how the proton therapy device was designed for patient treatment, how it works, and, how it is used in a safe and effective manner.
About the Lombardi Cancer Center:
The Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center, part of Georgetown University Medical Center, seeks to prevent, treat and cure cancers by linking scientific discovery, expert and compassionate patient care, quality education and partnership with the community — guided by the principle of cura personalis, "care for the whole person." Georgetown Lombardi, in partnership with John Theurer Cancer Center, is the research engine driving clinical cancer care at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital, an ACOS-accredited 609-bed teaching hospital, and the other hospitals in the D.C. Metro area collaborating within the MedStar Georgetown Cancer Institute. Established in 1970, the Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center is named for legendary football coach Vince Lombardi, who was treated for cancer at Georgetown University Hospital. What began as a small clinic treating cancer patients has grown into a state-of-the-art cancer center housing more than 240,000 square feet of clinic and research space.
