Arc flash is one of the two hazards primarily associated with electrical power systems. Due to prevalence, the majority of arc flash research has been dedicated to alternating current (AC) electrical systems. However, direct current (DC) electrical systems are becoming increasingly common. Examples of DC systems associated with electrical utilities include Electrical Storage Systems (ESSs), solar photovoltaic (PV) panels, and high-voltage (HV) DC transmission lines. This session will review concepts, current models, and recent testing performed by AEP’s Dolan Technology Center regarding DC Arc Flash.

It will be given by Mr. Austin Gaunce from AEP. 1.0 hour of PDH/CPD credit will be provided to attendees as needed.

Austin Gaunce

Biography:

Austin Gaunce graduated in 2019 with a MS degree in Mining Engineering from the University of Kentucky. He is currently pursuing a MS degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Kentucky. He works as an Engineer Associate in Station Engineering Design Standards at American Electric Power. He is a member of IEEE.
