SAVING MOTHERS & BABIES: DEVELOPING DIAGNOSTICS & THERAPEUTICS TO TACKLE MAJOR PREGNANCY COMPLICATIONS
Professor Stephen Tong’s team at Mercy Perinatal is developing novel diagnostics that flag mothers and babies at risk, so they can be safely treated before adverse outcomes occur. The concept is simple. Many major pregnancy complications occur because the placenta – the life support system – fails. The team is hunting for molecules in the mum’s blood that are increased (or decreased) during the window of time when the placenta is unwell and starting to fail. Using these diagnostics, Stephen's team aims to swiftly identify those at the highest risk and deliver life-saving treatments for our most vulnerable mothers and babies.

Professor Stephen Tong of University Of Melbourne
Biography:
Professor Stephen Tong is a clinician-scientist who leads The Translational Obstetrics Group. He is focussed on developing diagnostics and treatments to tackle pregnancy complications that threaten the lives of mothers and babies – ectopic pregnancy, preeclampsia and stillbirth. He has led 5-6 concepts from laboratory discovery to international trials in United Kingdom, South Africa, New Zealand and Australia. His team is also running major cohort studies in Solomon Islands, Pakistan and Cape Town. He has received three NHMRC Achievement awards and holds an NHMRC Practitioners Fellowship and a Synergy Grant.
