Kevin Chandra of Austin Energy

Austin is nationally recognized as an electric vehicle friendly city with over 1000 charging ports serving 12000+ drivers. Electric utilities must be prepared to support electric vehicle infrastructure and the associated load growth. This presentation will provide an overview on electric vehicle charging at the residential, commercial, and fleet level through the perspective of an electric utility. Austin Energy will share lessons learned during its deployment of charging infrastructure and how it tackles on the challenges in the transportation electrification space. Topics covered will be EV load curves, design scenarios diversity factors, charging use cases, emergency preparedness and more.

Biography:

Kevin Chandra - Systems Engineer at Austin Energy

Kevin Chandra is a Systems Engineer at Austin Energy. In this role, Kevin works on distribution coordination issues, protection settings for reclosers and switchgears, and supports the utility’s construction standards.     

He has been with Austin Energy over four years beginning his career as a summer intern in 2016 through the American Public Power Association DEED grant. His roles at Austin Energy include Asset Management, Distribution Design & Standards, Finance & Rates, Relay Engineering, and Electric Vehicles & Emerging Technologies. Previously, Kevin worked as an engineering technician at the University of Texas’ Office of Sustainability focused on energy storage and solar projects.

Outside of Austin Energy, Kevin serves in leadership positions for the City of Austin Young Professionals and for the Austin Hub for the World Economic Forum’s Global Shapers. Kevin holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin (2017) and a Masters in Electrical Engineering from the University of Arkansas (2020) passing his Professional Engineering Exam in Power in 2019. He is currently pursuing an MBA in Strategic Management at the University of North Texas.
