Terahertz propagation channels and communications systems - a key component of B5G
Abstract: The constantly increasing demand for higher datarates and higher user density is motivating the use of higher frequency ranges, where wide swaths of spectrum are available. While 5G is exploiting the mm-wave spectrum between 24 and 90 GHz, it is anticipated that B5G will go to even higher frequency ranges, to use the larger contiguous amounts of spectrum available in the Terahertz band, especially between 0.1 and 0.5 THz. A first step in designing systems is an understanding of the wireless propagation channel for this frequency range, and this talk will review both the fundamentals of propagation and available measurement results both from my and other groups. We will then discuss the implications those results have for multi-antenna system design, array structures, and transceiver structures.
Biography:
Andreas F. Molisch is the Solomon Golomb – Andrew and Erna Viterbi Chair professor at the University of Southern California (USC). His research interests are wireless propagation channels, multi-antenna systems, ultrawideband communication and localization, novel modulation and multiple access methods, and wireless video distribution. He has made contributions to international standards (3GPP, IEEE 802.11, IEEE 802.15) and academic literature (4 books, 250 journal papers, numerous conference papers), and many of his inventions (70 patents) have been adopted into standards and/or products. He is a Fellow of NAI, IEEE, AAAS, IET, Member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, and recipient of numerous awards.
