About our Private Tour:
This private tour is Saturday, November 1st, at the Fermilab facility in Batavia, IL.
We will visit the Lederman Science Center at 10:00am before our private tour.
This private tour is Saturday, November 1st, at the Fermilab facility in Batavia, IL. We will begin the 1 1/2-hour guided tour at 10:00am in WILSON HALL followed by a 45 minute ASK-A-SCIENTIST session plus a visit to the LEDERMAN SCIENCE EDUCATION CENTER for approximately 30 minutes. The tour begins in Wilson Hall where we will view the Laboratory from the 15th floor windows and visit various displays located there. The tour moves to the Linear Accelerator building where we will see the RFQ and historic Cockcroft-Walton, the components in the linear accelerator gallery and the Main Control Room. The Lederman Science Center houses hands-on exhibits that exemplify what scientists do at Fermilab and is also the location of a modest gift shop.
Note: Minimum age for the tour is 10 years old.
About Fermilab:
Fermilab builds and operates the accelerators, detectors and other facilities that physicists need to carry out forefront research in high-energy physics. Fermilab is the largest high-energy physics laboratory in the United States, and is second in the world only to CERN, the European Laboratory for Particle Physics.
Fermilab's Tevatron was the world's second-highest-energy particle accelerator and collider. In the Tevatron, counter-rotating beams of protons and antiprotons produced collisions allowing scientists to examine the most basic building blocks of matter, and the forces acting on them. Particle physics research has grown into an international effort, with experiment collaborations numbering in the hundreds. The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN is now producing collisions at seven times the energy of the Tevatron. More than 1,200 U.S. scientists are involved in the LHC and its experiments. Fermilab is now embarking on new subatomic neutrino research. Click this Fermilab YouTube video for an introduction into Fermilab's newest exciting science project, or visit the Fermilab Official Website.
Our trip details and logistics from Illinois Institute of Technology main campus(IIT):
This is a Saturday trip requiring driving to and from the facility. We are allowing less than an hour one way for the trip from IIT. Google Maps shows just 46 minutes without stopping from IIT main campus. So we leave IIT main campus at 9:00 and we will be there before 10:00 am. Those participants who want to drive need to be there before 10:00. The tour duration is about 3 hours so we leave the Fermi lab site about 1:00am. You should bring your lunch. Also we will stop by at the food center in Fermi Lab neighborhood. We try to get to IIT main campus no later than 3:00 pm. Our registration form below accommodates your choices.NOTE: We have a 50 person first come first served reservation limit for this tour based on the date/time your reservation is entered into our registration form below.
All tour participants must be at least 10 years old.
