Trans Arabian Oil Pipeline

Following the 1973 Yom Kipper War, the Shah of Iran is threatening world oil supply by shutting down the Straight of Hormuz.  The Saudi’s began development of the Trans Arabian Oil Pipeline to deliver Persian Gulf Oil safely to the Red Sea.  Brown & Root, one of the world’s largest construction contractors won the $1.1B design contract for this 700-mile pipeline so large its visible from space.  Ray Catlett, St. Louis Life Member who was heavily involved with the project will describe many aspects from its political beginnings through construction problems to include: initial flow rate; size; SSS regulations and impact on construction; desert heat impact on design; booster pumps; gas turbine pumps; N-1 design; total on line HP; quantity of pump stations; receiving station layout; shipping pumps to tankers; DC control wiring.

Biography:

Ray Catlett received his BSEE degree from University of Missouri-Rolla and a Masters Engineering Management (M.E.M.) from Washington University where his focus was technology assessment and innovation.  He has retired from ABB as a Senior Technical Consultant.  He has 39 years of design, analysis and consulting experience in power systems and has co-authored 10+ IEEE/IAS/PCIC/ESW/PPIC peer reviewed papers. Inducted into the Academy of Electrical and Computer Engineering, MO University of Science and Technology.  He is a life senior member of IEEE and a registered professional engineer in Texas (inactive status).
