IEEE Seminar on 'Planning in the Real World'
Abstract: This presentation will cover how electricity markets, climate change, distributed technologies and reducing electricity demand have changed the planning processes for Australia’s National Electricity Market. This will included examples of recent Powerlink innovations in load forecasting that reflect the impacts of PV, energy storage, tariff changes on future peak demand and annual energy usage. The market mechanisms for generation planning in the NEM will be outlined along with how these are driving retirements of fossil fuelled power stations an investments in renewable generation. Examples will be given of innovations in transmission planning to optimise asset replacements during times of falling peak demand will be given. Lastly, the presentation will touch on some of the expected changes to power system security and electricity markets as Australia moves to higher levels of renewable generation

Simon is a Fellow of the Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering; Institution of Engineers Australia and Institute of Company Directors. He was awarded the IET Sir Lionel Hooke award in 2007, Queensland Electrical Engineer of the Year in 2008, Australian Professional Engineer of the Year in 2009 and a Member of the Order of Australia in 2012.
Simon has forty years’ experience in the power industry in electricity transmission and power generation in Australia, Europe and Canada. This included the planning and approval of more than 5,000MW of generating plant, most of the Queensland transmission grid and QNI.
