Topic:

The Future and the IEEE

In January 2024 I will become the President of the IEEE, the largest technical professional organization in the world.

Technology drives much of the wealth created today and many of the opportunities and challenges that we face today can be realized or resolved respectively using technology.  IEEE is fostering efforts in future technology directions and the megatrends that drive those activities, technology roadmaps, ethical use of AI and the future development of outer space.  We are also working on particular mission based projects such as mitigating climate change.   In this talk we will look at these activities within the IEEE and how they will help us achieve our missions on advancing technology for the benefit of humanity.

Biography:

Tom Coughlin, President, Coughlin Associates is a digital storage analyst and business/ technology consultant.  He has over 40 years in the data storage industry with engineering and senior management positions.  Coughlin Associates consults, publishes books and market and technology reports and puts on digital storage-oriented events.  He is a regular contributor for forbes.com and M&E organization websites.  He is an IEEE Fellow, 2023 IEEE President Elect, Past-President IEEE-USA, Past Director IEEE Region 6 and Past Chair Santa Clara Valley IEEE Section, and is also active with SNIA and SMPTE. Steven Bathiche

Topic:

The Outside Agent

For the past 50 years our entire computer interaction model has been governed by a single paradigm, direct manipulation and command-and-control via a keyboard, mouse, or touch.

For the next 50 years, this direct and very explicit interaction model will be completely transformed by big AI. The implications will be earth-shattering to our entire industry and to this company.

In this talk we will touch advances in artificial intelligence (AI) and its new silicon—neural processing units (NPU’s). We will evaluate the performance of NPUs. Show examples of new applications of Large Models to human interfaces and new devices formfactors. And finally talk through the implication Agents as the new platform and elude to the potential of Agent first devices it enables.

Biography:

Steven Bathiche,  Technical Fellow / Vice President, Windows and Devices

Steven Bathiche leads Microsoft’s Applied Sciences Group, an interdisciplinary team of scientists, A.I. researchers, and product engineers in the Windows and Devices organization.  His guiding purpose is to evolve the computer as a tool that helps people achieve their intent.  He does this through a multidisciplinary approach that brings together diverse science and engineering disciplines to invent new interaction technologies that remove barriers, reduce friction, and extend ability.

He has helped evolve the PC architecture with neural processors, and developed architectures for distributed A.I. loads.  He is engaged in developing devices, software and experiences powered by foundational A.I. models for the Windows platform.

A Microsoft technical fellow, Bathiche has been inventing and shipping new devices and experiences since 1999, including the original Surface table.  He holds more than 120 patents.  A fellow of the Society for Information Display (SID) and an IEEE innovator honoree, he is a frequent speaker at international conferences, and a distinguished lecturer.  His work has been featured in both technical publications and popular media.
