Prof. Sinem Coleri

Topic:

AI Based Ultra-Reliable Wireless Networked Control Systems in 6G

Unlike previous generations of networks, which were primarily designed to meet the requirements of human communications, 5G networks enable the collection of data from the machines as well. The total number of devices is expected to be around 26 billion in 2026, according to the Ericsson Mobility Report. Looking forward to 6G systems, the focus shifts towards leveraging this data for a new spectrum of control applications, including extended reality, remote surgery and autonomous vehicle platoons. Designing communication systems for these control applications poses unique challenges. It requires meeting stringent requirements for delay and reliability, addressing the semantics of control systems and ensuring robust resource management. In the first part of this talk, ultra-reliable channel modeling and communication techniques are presented based on extreme value theory and generative artificial intelligence (AI). Generative AI enables predicting the channel parameters with higher accuracy while incorporating various system inputs and providing adaptivity to dynamic scenarios. In the second part of the talk, the benefits of employing optimization theory based, explainable and safe AI in radio resource management for the joint design of control and communication systems in 6G networks are provided. These approaches offer a systematic methodology to enhance robustness and interpret decisions made by black-box AI models.

Biography:

Sinem Coleri is a Professor and the Chair of the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering at Koc University. She is also the founding director of Wireless Networks Laboratory (WNL) and director of Ford Otosan Automotive Technologies Laboratory. Sinem Coleri received the BS degree in electrical and electronics engineering from Bilkent University in 2000, the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering and computer sciences from University of California Berkeley in 2002 and 2005. She worked as a research scientist in Wireless Sensor Networks Berkeley Lab under sponsorship of Pirelli and Telecom Italia from 2006 to 2009. Since September 2009, she has been a faculty member in the department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering at Koc University. Her research interests are in 6G wireless communications and networking, machine learning for wireless networks, machine-to-machine communications, wireless networked control systems and vehicular networks. Dr. Coleri has more than 150 publications with citations over 10700 (Google scholar profile). She has received numerous awards and recognitions, including N2Women: Stars in Computer Networking and Communications in 2022; TUBITAK (The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey) Incentive Award and IEEE Vehicular Technology Society Neal Shepherd Memorial Best Propagation Paper Award in 2020.  Dr. Coleri currently holds the position of Editor-in-Chief at the IEEE Open Journal of the Communications Society.  Dr. Coleri is an IEEE Fellow and IEEE ComSoc Distinguished Lecturer.

Empowering Wellness: Human Behaviour Recognition for Well-being and Sustainability

In our modern era of ubiquitous technology, the fusion of sensors, wearables, and human behavior analysis holds promise for improving individuals' quality of life. Indeed, it has been largely demonstrated how human behaviour can affect, on different levels, individuals' life, not only considering their psycho-physical health state but also as a result of the big impact that human behaviour can have on the environment and the surrounding. People often keep on carrying on these harmful habits simply because they are not fully aware of them or because they do not know which would be a better alternative. Therefore monitoring, learning and understanding human habits and how they influence one person's life, is very important and useful in order to provide users with tools that can make them aware of wrong behaviours and give them some kind of suggestions to discourage these habits and consolidate virtuous ones. Drawing upon research in Building Energy and Comfort Management (BECM) Systems and healthcare, it is important to explore how human behavior profoundly impacts personal well-being and environmental sustainability. Through activity recognition and behavior analysis, the potential of sensor networks and wearable devices is explored to monitor, understand, and influence user habits. This talk delves into the fusion of these technologies and aspects to empower users with insights into their habits and behaviors, both at home and in their daily activities.

Biography:

Francesca Marcello is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (DIEE) of the University of Cagliari. In 2019 she received the Master Degree in Telecommunication Engineering magna cum laude.  She obtained her Ph.D. in Electronic and Computer Engineering from the University of Cagliari in February 2023. Additionally, she holds the title of Doctor Europaeus for her research stint abroad at the University of Siegen, in Germany (November 2021-April 2022). Her doctoral thesis received the “Digital Sustainability Award” for the Best “ICT Women” Doctoral Thesis, sponsored by Fondazione per la Sostenibilità Digitale – Digital Transformation Institute ETS, in collaboration with EHT S.C.p.A.  Her main research interests are on the Internet of Things (IoT), along with user habit and activity recognition and prediction within the realm of Smart Buildings. Her endeavors are dedicated to optimize energy and comfort management systems to enhance user well-being and quality of life.

INCLUVERSO 5G – Inclusive Immersive Communication Experiences Over 5G Networks

Extended Reality technology shows an extraordinary potential to improve the inclusion of people in situation of psychosocial vulnerability, such as people with intellectual disability, dependency or neurocognitive impairment. In the project INCLUVERSO 5G, we are exploring three experimental use cases aimed at developing, adapting, and validating Extended Reality (XR) technology for users of the occupational training center for opportunities and labor integration of Fundación Juan XXIII. First, we are developing a cognitive therapy XR application to address the fear of some users of the center of ascending or descending stairs. By a controlled exposure of the patients to an immersive environment showing the anxiety-evoking situation (e.g. the stairs), they learn relaxation techniques that help them address this situation in real life. In the second use case, we use immersive telepresence to provide remote assistance to users of a supervised apartment. This allows complementing in-person assistance of professionals with a higher-quality remote support, increasing the autonomy of the users. Finally, the third use case addresses remote learning of vocational training courses, such as pastry operations, using XR to replace some in-person lessons by remote ones. This allows students to follow lessons if they cannot temporarily attend the training center in person due to personal issues. The project explores the required combination of technology to provide these use cases, both from the XR systems and from the underlying communication network. To that extent, a private 5G network has been deployed in the premises of the Foundation to support the execution of the use cases. The ultimate goal of the project, which is now at the midpoint of its implementation, is to move towards the development of a fully inclusive metaverse or Incluverse.

Biography:

Marta Orduna is a Telecommunication Engineer, Bachelor of Engineering in Telecommunication Technologies and Services in 2016 and Master in Telecommunication Engineering (accredited by ABET) in 2018 (Master Graduation Award), both from Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM). In 2023, she received her PhD from UPM entitled "Understanding and Assessing Quality of Experience in Immersive Communications”. In 2023, she joined Nokia Extended Reality Lab team in Spain, where she continues her research line of the PhD in the area of quality of experience in extended reality. She enjoys engaging in outreach activities to promote scientific careers among young people, specifically among underrepresented groups.

Challenges in Pilot Transmission for Multicarrier-based Communications Towards 6G

The transmission of pilot symbols jointly with data in multicarrier waveforms has been widely explored. The need of efficient signaling to carry out several tasks as channel estimation, synchronization and peak-to-average power reduction has led to a variety of pilot patterns through different communication standards. The main objective of these pilots is to estimate and track channel variations across different domains. However, this pilot transmission implies a sacrifice in data rate that may become prohibitive in the upcoming communications networks. Indeed, new wireless services are being deployed in the current 5G and next 6G of mobile communication systems. All these new applications not only demand an increased data rate, that may require both a huge bandwidth and massive multi-antenna deployments, but they also need a negligible latency to provide a true seamless experience. Moreover, the deployment of these services implies facing new challenging scenarios, e.g. high-mobility cases for vehicles, long-distance links for satellites and energy-efficient systems for sensors. In this context, many challenges arise and regular pilots may not be feasible while superimposed pilots could be an alternative. Some insights will be offered since it is envisaged that many research efforts will be focused on this issue.

Biography:

M. Julia Fernández-Getino García received the M. Eng. and Ph.D. degrees in telecommunication engineering from the Polytechnic University of Madrid, Spain, in 1996 and 2001, respectively. She is currently with the Department of Signal Theory and Communications, Carlos III University of Madrid, Spain, as a Professor. From 1996 to 2001, she held a research position with the Department of Signals, Systems and Radiocommunications, Polytechnic University of Madrid. She visited Bell Laboratories, Murray Hill, NJ, USA,  in 1998; visited Lund University, Sweden, during two periods in 1999 and 2000; visited Politecnico di Torino, Italy, in 2003 and 2004; and visited Aveiro University, Portugal, in 2009 and 2010. Her research interests include multicarrier communications and signal processing for wireless systems. She is co-author of 7 book chapters and she has published more than 90 papers in international journals and conferences. She has received several awards and recognitions, including the best "Master Thesis" and "Ph.D. Thesis" awards from the Professional Association of Telecommunication Engineers of Spain in 1998 and 2003, respectively; the "Student Paper Award" at the IEEE International Symposium on Personal, Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications (PIMRC) in 1999; the "Certificate of Appreciation" at the IEEE Vehicular Technology Conference (VTC) in 2000; the "Ph.D. Extraordinary Award" from the Polytechnic University of Madrid in 2004; the "Juan de la Cierva National Award" from AENA Foundation in 2004; and the "Excellence Award" from Carlos III University of Madrid in 2012 to her research career. Also, she has received several awards for individual research, lecturing and publications merits from Carlos III University of Madrid. She has occupied some management positions at Carlos III University of Madrid, as Academic Secretary and Vice-Head of Signal Theory and Communications Department. During 2013-2020, she was the Dean of the Bachelor’s Degree in Telecommunication Technologies Engineering and the Bachelor’s Degree in Communications Systems Engineering.
