"Shaping and Sensing of Light Fields"
Over the recent decades, the concept of shaping light fields has risen to prominence owing to the rapid expansion of applications involving light fields with meticulously defined spatial distribution of intensity, wavefront, and polarization. Various features linked to angular momentum, propagation behaviours, and optical singularities have emerged in conjunction with spatially engineered light. They are alternately referred to as structured light.
Wavefront shaping techniques are employed to realize structured light, such as Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) beams and vector beams. LG beams exhibit spiral-shaped wavefronts and possess phase singularities, associated with orbital angular momentum (OAM). LG beams find practical utility in applications involving the interaction of light with matter, such as the manipulation of biological specimens and material processing. Furthermore, the inherent vector nature of light enables the creation of vector beams that hold inhomogeneous polarization patterns as they travel through space. Such beams exhibit distinctive qualities; for instance, a vector beam with radial polarization can achieve finer focal spots than standard Gaussian beams.
Compared to the binary polarization basis, LG beams can hold more orthogonal modes associated with the OAM. This high dimensional diversity from OAM modes holds significant potential for pioneering breakthroughs in information science, particularly in data processing, communications, and cryptography. Structured beams offer many scopes for developing more streamlined and potent information systems including both classical and quantum cryptosystems. Consequently, the significance of various forms of structured light is experiencing a rapid surge, owing to their applications in various optical systems. Progress made in the above-discussed aspects will be presented in the talk.
