Iowa DOT Traffic Management Center Tour
Ever wonder who is watching the video feeds from all the cameras along our major roads or who is composing the messages that appear on the highway information boards? This month on Thursday September 8 we will find out! We have been offered the chance to tour Iowa Department of Transportation’s Traffic Management Center (TMC) to kick off our fall season.
The TMC manages Iowa’s statewide traffic operations. Resources available to the TMC include over 330 pan-tilt-zoom cameras, over 320 traffic speed volume sensors, over 200 permanent and portable dynamic message signs, Highway Helper motorist assist services in three metro areas, notifications from law enforcement at the state, county and city levels, access to network-wide probe speed data, and crowd-sourced incident data.
The facility is located in the basement of the Motor Vehicle/Driver License Station just east of I-35 at the Corporate Woods exit. Meet at the front entrance.
This will be a joint meeting with the IEEE Computer Society Chapter and the Engineers Club of Des Moines.
Dinner: Following the presentation we will drive to Godfather’s Pizza, 802 N Ankeny Blvd, Ankeny, IA. Everybody will order from the menu or enjoy the buffet.

Tim Simodynes of Iowa DOT

Biography:
Our host and tour leader will be Tim Simodynes, P.E. (civil), Intelligent Transportation Systems “ITS” Engineer, Office of Traffic Operations, Iowa Department of Transportation, Ames.
Tim has been with the Iowa DOT for 19 years, and the ITS Engineer since 2012. Tim is responsible for planning and managing technical services in support of traffic operations and management, including ITS deployments and maintenance and intelligent work zones. Prior to moving into ITS, Tim worked for 14 years in the Office of Traffic & Safety.
Originally from Omaha, Nebraska, Tim received both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in civil engineering from Iowa State University.
