Tour of Abbott Power Plant - University of Illinois
Abbott Power Plant (APP) provides reliable and environmentally responsible electricity for power and steam for space heating, domestic hot water heating and kitchen use to the majority of buildings on the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign campus. It was built in 1940 (it recently celebrated its 75th birthday!) and can generate 84 MW of electric power and 1,010 klb/hr of steam. Abbott utilizes four technologies that make it unique among plants its age: 1) combined heat and power to optimize energy efficiency, 2) fuel flexibility 3) equipment redundancy, and 4) flue-gas scrubbing to reduce emissions.
