After a brief introduction to my environment at the ZHAW, I will delve into 2-3  very recent results on our work computer vision (tackling in-plane rotation with mental rotation), document recognition (considering it as a transcription task rather than image recognition) & process monitoring (how joint embeddings lead to root cause analysis in industrial production and, eventually, world models). I than venture an outlook on AI and the human: How can be conceive positive visions of our future societies?

Thilo Stadelmann

Biography:

Thilo Stadelmann is professor of AI/ML at the ZHAW School of Engineering in Winterthur, Switzerland, director of the ZHAW Centre for Artificial Intelligence and head of its Machine Perception and Cognition Group. He studied computer science in Giessen and Marburg and received his Doctor of Science degree from Marburg University, Germany, in 2010, where he worked on multimedia analysis and voice recognition. Thilo held engineering and leadership roles in the automotive industry for several years prior to his appointment at the ZHAW. His group focuses on robust deep learning to solve diverse pattern recognition tasks such as document analysis or computer vision for industrial and medical applications. His current research interests include learning actionable representations to build common-sense world models as a next-level paradigm for AI, as well as the societal implications of AI. Thilo is fellow of the European Centre for Living Technology in Venice, Italy, founder of the start-up AlpineAI that builds SwissGPT for businesses, co-founder of Switzerland’s largest innovation network, the data innovation alliance, and of the ZHAW Datalab, one of Europe’s first dedicated research hubs for data science.
