Abstract:

High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) systems and Power Electronics are at the forefront of innovation in the modern energy landscape, playing a pivotal role in advancing grid reliability, efficiency, and sustainability. This talk will explore the latest developments and emerging trends in these critical technologies. The discussion will also cover the role of Power Electronics in enabling grid flexibility through Flexible AC Transmission Systems (FACTS) and Custom Power solutions. In addition, Dr. Adapa will highlight real-world applications, challenges in large-scale implementation, and future research directions. Attendees will gain a comprehensive understanding of how HVDC and Power Electronics are shaping the next generation of energy systems, along with career and research opportunities in these transformative fields. This talk is highly relevant for researchers, industry professionals, and students interested in exploring innovative solutions for a sustainable energy future.

Biography:

Dr. Ram Adapa is a Technical Executive at the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) in the Energy Delivery and Customer Solutions Sector. His research focuses on High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) transmission, Flexible AC Transmission Systems (FACTS), Custom Power, and Fault Current Limiters. He earned his B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University, India, his M.S. from the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur, and his Ph.D. from the University of Waterloo, Canada. An IEEE Fellow, Dr. Adapa has authored over 125 technical papers and serves as an IEEE Distinguished Lecturer. He also received the 2023 IEEE Uno Lamm HVDC award and 2016 IEEE Nari Hingorani Customer Power award.
