The IEEE GRSS Student Branch of Alva`s Institute of Engineering and Technology [AIET College] was officially inaugurated on 11th December 2024. The event aimed to inspire students to engage in technological advancements and foster collaborations with academia and industry through IEEE's vast resources and initiatives.
The program commenced with a formal inauguration ceremony attended by students, faculty members, and esteemed guests. The chief guests for the event were Dr. Shyam Lal and Dr. Shwetha H R from NITK Surathkal, who graced the occasion with their presence and insightful contributions.

Shyam Lal received Ph.D. degree in Digital Image Processing from
Department of Electronics & Communication Engineering, Birla
Institute of Technology, Mesra, Ranchi (Jharkhand), India in the year
2013, M. Tech Degree (ECE) in the year 2007 from NIT Kurukshetra,
Haryana, India and B.Tech Degree in EIE in the year 2001 from
Bundelkhand Institute of Engineering and Technology (State Govt.
Engineering college) Jhansi (U.P.), India. He has joined National
Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK), Surathkal, Mangalore
(Karnataka), India on 18 th December 2013 as Assistant Professor and
Currently, he is working as Associate Professor in the Department of
Electronics & Communication Engineering, NITK, Surathkal,
Mangalore (Karnataka), India. He was Visiting Professor at University
of Pavia, Italy from 19th November 2018 to 30th November 2018 (two weeks). He was Visiting
Fellow at Tokyo Institute of Technology, Tokyo, Japan from 4th July, 2016 to 15th July, 2016 (two
weeks). He is CEO and Director of M/S AIQUANTUM SMART SOLUTION PRIVATE LIMITED,
STEP-NITK SURATHKAL, KARNATAKA, INDIA. He was consultant of M/s Starfleet Ventures,
Canada. He has more than 21 years of Teaching & Research experience. He has supervised 08 Ph.D.
students and currently 06 Ph.D. students are working under his supervision in the area of Satellite
Image Processing, Medical Image Processing, IoT and Cyber security. He has completed 05 R&D
projects funded by SERB-DST, MeitY, ISRO, Google USA and currently executing 04 R&D projects
funded by ISRO, Govt. of India, VGST, Government of Karnataka and DoT, Govt. of India. He has
published more than 100 research papers in the area of Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning and
Deep Learning with Applications in Medical Image processing and Satellite Image Processing at
International/National Journals & Conferences. He has received Early Career Research Award
(Young Scientist) in 2017 from Science Engineering and Research Board (SERB), Department of
Science and Technology (DST), Govt. of India; Young Faculty Research Fellow (YFRF) in 2019
from Digital India Innovation, MeitY, Govt of India and he has also received Award for
Outstanding Research Publication in year 2024 from VGST, Government of Karnataka. He has
also filed 02 Indian patents and 01 is granted and 01 is published. He has delivered more than 140
invited technical talk, expert lectures and Keynote Address in the area of Artificial Intelligence,
Machine Learning and Deep Leaning with various applications in the field of science, engineering and
technology. He has been Guest Editor of IJSISE, Inderscience Publishers, Editorial member of Open
Access Journal of Biomedical Engineering and its Applications, Lupine Publishers, USA. He is
Guest Editor of Applied Soft Computing Journal, Elsevier Publisher. He was holding Vice-chair
position, IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society (GRSS) Bangalore Chapter from January
2021 to December 2023 and Currently he is Chair of IEEE GRSS Bangalore Chapter from
January 2024. He is Senior Member of IEEE, life member of ISTE, New Delhi, India, Life member
of IAENG, Hong Kong and Life member of IACSIT, Singapore. His area of interest includes
Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Deep Learning and Optimization Algorithms with

The session on "Satellite Remote Sensing Applications – Past, Present, and Future" by Dr. Shwetha H R offered a comprehensive overview of the evolution and advancements in satellite remote sensing technology. Biography:
Dr. Shwetha H.R. is an esteemed Assistant Professor in the Department of Applied Mechanics and Hydraulics at the National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK), Surathkal. She holds a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, where her research focused on estimating daily actual evapotranspiration using microwave and optical vegetation indices under varying sky conditions. Dr. Shwetha also completed her M.Tech in Remote Sensing and GIS from NITK and her B.E. in Civil Engineering from Malnad College of Engineering, Hassan.
With extensive expertise in optical and microwave remote sensing, Dr. Shwetha’s research spans surface and subsurface water hydrology, agricultural water resource management, and digital image processing. She has made significant contributions to the field, publishing research in high-impact journals such as the Hydrological Sciences Journal and the ISPRS Journal of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing. Her work has been recognized globally, including features in Science Trends and the Bangalore Mirror.
Dr. Shwetha’s dedication to research and teaching is evident in her numerous academic achievements, international conference presentations, and her active engagement in guiding students and researchers. Her passion for leveraging technology for sustainable water management and agriculture continues to inspire the academic and research community.
