Biography:
Dr. Cardenas is originally from Havana Cuba yet raised in Illinois. He received
his degrees in Engineering Mechanics and Civil Engineering at the University of
Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. During his graduate studies, he served as a
Principal Investigator at the U.S. Army Construction Engineering Research
Laboratories and as Director of Research and Development for Gill Athletics in
Champaign. Since 2003 he has been the Jack T. Painter endowed professor of
Civil Engineering at Louisiana Tech University where he also served as the
Department Chair for Mechanical Engineering. As Director of the Applied
Electrokinetics Laboratory he leads a multi-disciplinary research team, in
authoring over 70 publications, patents, and commercial licenses on work that
enhances the functionality of engineering materials. Outside the lab, he is
passionate about leading groups on service expeditions into remote wild places
as well as the most industrial of habitats. He currently serves as Director of the
Mechanical Engineering Senior Design Consortium and of the MALT
Industrial Research and Assessment Center. His next development is the
newly minted Foundation for Professional Excellence which provides fun yet
proven strategies for getting technical people collaborating at a high level.
