A candid look at the mechanics behind academic dishonesty in the AI era, connecting motivational gaps, task design, time pressure, and relevance to real-world work; pairs research-informed gamification strategies with authentic tasks to shift from "policing" to "learning." This deep dive into student motivation explores how AI and gamified learning environments can either reduce or amplify academic dishonesty, arguing that the opposite of cheating is authentic learning and offering strategies to reframe assessment through connection, relevance, and support.

Biography:

Dr. Szymon Machajewski is Associate Director of Academic Technology and Learning Innovation at the University of Illinois Chicago. With 20+ years in college teaching, this educational technology expert specializes in learning analytics and gamification. An early AI adopter in education, he designed AI software since 2013, earning AWS recognition for innovation and a U.S. software patent in e-learning. His work has earned accolades including the prestigious UIC Award of Merit and a national award for Optimizing Student Experience and Leading Change. He chairs the EDUCAUSE Student Success Analytics Steering Committee and serves on the EDSAFE AI Alliance Council.
