Topic:

Improving STEM Education in California

Abstract:
The umbrella term "Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics" (STEM), and its STEAM variant, where "Arts" is also included to foster holistic and creative design, encompasses fields that play key roles in national and international economic advancement and prosperity. Ever since the onset of the space race in the late 1950s,  there have been growing concerns in the US that other countries are challenging us in terms of the number and quality of their STEM graduates. Therefore, initiatives to improve STEM education have proliferated at the national, state, and local levels. University of California, as the premier system of higher education in the world's fourth largest economy, has been at the forefront of such efforts. In this talk, after introductory remarks on the importance and status of STEM education in general, I will report on UC's latest efforts, as presented at "UC Academic Congress: Math Preparation and STEM Pathways," held virtually on March 9-10, 2026.
