Improved SIMPLIS MOSFET modeling for switching losses for SiC and GaN devices
Abstract:
In SIMPLIS version 9.4, the SIMPLIS MOSFET model extraction process has been improved to accommodate important differences between Si, GaN and SiC devices. This new model extraction process can now automatically handle both 4-terminal and 3-terminal devices. This improved model can also include parasitic lead inductances. In addition, we discuss the importance of modeling MOSFET drivers along with straightforward methods of modeling critical current and voltage limitations of these drivers in SIMPLIS. We will examine an example using a DAB converter to explore switching losses on both the primary-side bridge and the secondary-side bridge as a function of output power and deadtime.
Biography:
Thomas G. Wilson Jr. is currently the President of SIMPLIS Technologies, Inc. and the Technology Leader of Simulation Software at the Power Electronics Industry. He received the A.B. degree from Harvard University, in 1972, and the M.Eng. and D.Eng. degrees from the University of California at Berkeley, Berkeley, CA, USA, in 1974 and 1977, respectively. He worked for 20 years at AT&T Bell Labs as a Power Supply Designer, Design Manager, Manufacturing Manager, Marketing Manager, and Applications Manager. In 1994, he left AT&T to become a Chief Engineer at Zytec Corporation. In 2000, he joined Transim Technology Corporation as the Vice President of Engineering.
