Abstract

In-band full-duplex (IBFD) communication, which enables simultaneous transmission and reception over the same frequency channel, has emerged as a key enabler for sixth-generation (6G) networks. By doubling spectral efficiency in principle, IBFD offers a compelling response to the escalating demand for high-speed wireless connectivity. Beyond communication alone, IBFD also plays a pivotal role in integrated sensing and communication (ISAC), allowing a single hardware platform and waveform to simultaneously support data transmission and environmental sensing. The principal challenge in realising practical IBFD systems lies in mitigating self-interference (SI), the strong transmitter leakage that can overwhelm the receiver and severely degrade performance.

In this talk, I will present our advanced SI cancellation solutions, which integrate analog-domain suppression with digital-domain adaptive algorithms to achieve deep SI mitigation. By further incorporating antenna-domain isolation, we have developed an end-to-end IBFD prototype that unifies all three layers of SI suppression—antenna, analog, and digital—into a fully functional system.

I will then turn to the new challenges that arise in SI management for IBFD ISAC. Sensing echoes introduce additional mutual interference (MI) with uplink communication signals, and Doppler shifts induced by moving targets further complicate interference estimation and cancellation. To conclude, I will outline our recent research on advanced analog SIC techniques tailored to IBFD ISAC.
