March 21 presentation on IEEE Standards; “Once Upon a Standard: The Story of the IEEE Standards Association”

When people think of standards – if they think of them at all – they often think “boring” or “political” or “who cares?” But the story of standards is far from one that puts you to sleep. The value of standards to modern life is immeasurable. The process for creating them is actually multi-faceted and interesting. The IEEE Standards Association, a producer of global standards, has been in the standards business for 100 years. Karen Bartleson, President-Elect of the IEEE-Standards Association, will tell you the story of the IEEE-SA and give you an appreciation of the Association's scope of effort, its roles and responsibilities, its standards-development process, and how our local engineers can get involved. The first 30 people who attend this session will receive a complimentary copy of Karen’s short book, “The Ten Commandments for Effective Standards”.

Attendance to the meeting is FREE to IEEE members as well as non-members. Pizza and sodas will be available: Free to IEEE members, $5 for non-members. The location is Agilent Technologies, 1900 Garden of the Gods, Lobby “C” Entrance.

She joined Synopsys in 1995 as standards program manager and am currently senior director of community marketing. Her primary responsibilities include initiatives and programs that increase customer satisfaction by developing communities - with social media and traditional channels - for EDA interoperability, sustainability, customer engagement, higher education and research.

One of the electronic design industry’s first bloggers, She is the author of “The Standards Game” blog. Ms. Bartleson has published numerous articles on topics about standards and universities. her first book, "The Ten Commandments for Effective Standards" was published in May 2010 and is available through Amazon and other outlets.

She is currently a member of several governing committees for standards of the IEEE whose mission is fostering technological innovation and excellence for the benefit of humanity. Ms. Bartleson was elected to serve as President of the IEEE Standards for the 2013-2014 term.

Prior to joining Synopsys, Ms. Bartleson was CAD manager at UTMC (United Technologies Microelectronics Center) in Colorado Springs, responsible for the design system used to create high-reliability and radiation-hardened ASICs. Before that, she worked at Texas Instruments as logic analysis manager where she was responsible for the development and support of TI’s internal logic simulation products.

Ms. Bartleson was honored to be the recipient of the Marie R. Pistilli Women in Design Automation Achievement Award in 2003.
