IMPACT OF FAST-FRONT OVERVOLTAGE TRANSIENTS ON OIL-PAPER INSULATION SYSTEMS
Speaker : Prof. K.D. Srivastava, University of British Columbia, Canada
Abstract: Oil-paper insulation systems have been in use for a long time in electrical
power apparatus, such as, generators, motors, transformers and cables. The
operating voltages, particularly for high voltage cables have been
continually increasing and 1000 kV designs are available. In the last few
decades the range of insulating materials, in addition to the various
insulating liquids, has also expanded gratly. Some other developments in
the application domain have adversely impacted the performance and life-time
of the above apparatus. For example the extensive use of inverters and
converters, which generate repetitive fast-front overvoltage transients. In
addition, the use of SF6 insulated compact substations also generate such
transients in the operating voltage range of such compact substations. The
accumulated field experience shows apparatus failures often occur. This
presentation gives a summary of R&D findings about the possible failure
modes of oil-paper insulation in service.
