UBC CAMPUS AS A LIVING LABORATORY FOR MICROGRID ENERGY SYSTEMS
Speaker : Prof. K.D. Srivastava, University of British Columbia, Canada
Abstract: Several university campuses in North America have committed to work with
energy sector industrial partners to establish sustainability initiatives.
The hope is that such alliances should enable the campuses to be prepared as
the new technologies are 'mature' . At UBC, the initiative exploits the
needed requirements of the campus physical infrastructures. It would enable
UBC to demonstrate clean sustainable technologies and practices. The other
strategic advantages are new R&D opportunities and enhancing our
undergraduate and graduate teaching. Institutions, such as universities have
the operational advantage of being a 'single' ownership operation, and the
dominant public policy issues, such as tariffs, are not a major factor. In
2010,UBC adopted a climate action plan, committing to aggressive greenhouse
gas reduction targets of: 33% below the 2007 levels by 2015 and increasing
the reduction levels to be 100% below by 2050. This presentation describes
the UBC experience to date, and how the UBC community is benefitting from
this living lab. initiative!
