IEEE UK&I AES Society UK Maritime Surveillance Radars for the RAF 1940–2010
Prof Simon Watts will be giving a talk titled: "UK Maritime Surveillance Radars for the RAF 1940–2010" for the inaugural presentation for the AES Society as part of the society being re-established in the UK & Ireland.

Abstract: The history of airborne radars developed in the UK for long range maritime surveillance by the RAF spans from 1940, when ASV Mk. I entered service on Sunderland and Hudson aircraft, through to the 1980s, when the Searchwater radar entered service on the Nimrod MR2. This history came to an end in 2010 when the Nimrod MRA4 programme was cancelled and the Nimrod MR2 taken out of service.
During WWII the first UK centimetric ASV radars were developed (ASV Mks III & VI and latterly ASV Mk. VII), fitted to aircraft such as the Sunderland, Halifax and Wellington, used by Coastal Command. In 1950, the Shackleton MR aircraft entered service, with the ASV Mk. 13 radar, upgraded to ASV 21 in 1959. The Nimrod MR1 replaced to Shackletons in 1970, fitted with the ASV 21D radar, and in 1980 the Nimrod MR2 with the Searchwater radar was introduced.
Prof Simon Watts Bio:
Simon Watts graduated from the University of Oxford in 1971, obtained an MSc and DSc from the University of Birmingham in 1972 and 2013, respectively, and a PhD from the CNAA in 1987. He was deputy Scientific Director and Technical Fellow in Thales UK until 2013 and is a Visiting Professor in the department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering at University College London. He joined Thales (then EMI Electronics) in 1967 and worked on a wide range of radar and EW projects, with a particular research interest in maritime radar and sea clutter. He is author and co-author of over 80 journal and conference papers, a book on sea clutter and several patents. He was chairman of the international radar conference RADAR-97 in Edinburgh UK. Professor Watts received the IEE JJ Thomson Premium Award in 1987 and the IEE Mountbatten Premium Award in 1991. He serves on the IEEE AESS Radar Systems Panel, is an Associate Editor for Radar for the IEEE Transactions AES and a member of the Editorial Board of IET Radar, Sonar & Navigation. He was appointed MBE in 1996 for services to the UK defence industry and is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, Fellow of the IET, Fellow of the IMA and Fellow of the IEEE.
