Blockchain technology is an immutable database that grows over time from an initial root block. Each new block added is cryptographically linked to the previous block in a reversed link list that ends at the root block. The cryptographic linking prevents tampering of the data contained in the blockchain, and provides an immutable "ledger" of transactions through time. The technology can be distributed and used as the basis of fact for agents and systems that operate in a decentralized fashion and require no inter-dependent trust with other agents or systems. This is a relatively new development in distributed systems research. Smart contracts and other programming constructs are opening the way for decentralized serverless computing with blockchain being critical for maintaining state in a decentralized process. The talk focuses on the basics of blockchain and also on the educational opportunities that exist to learn and understand blockchain.
