EEE Students visit Khulna Shipyard and Orion Power Rupsha
A group of 43 students and 4 faculty members from the Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE) of Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) visited the Khulna Shipyard Ltd and Orion Power Rupsha Ltd during a 4-day industrial tour from 21-24 November, 2018.
A group of 43 students and 4 faculty members from the Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE) of Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) visited the Khulna Shipyard Ltd and Orion Power Rupsha Ltd during a 4-day industrial tour from 21-24 November, 2018. The purpose of the industrial tour was to give the students a practical idea about the applications of engineering in commercial industry as well as to make collaboration with the industrial sectors. The tour was organized by Department of EEE, IUB in collaboration with IEEE Industrial Application Society (IAS) Chapter of IUB.
The first part of the industrial tour was to visit the Khulna Shipyard Ltd. Founded in 1957, Khulna Shipyard Limited is a ship construction and repair yard at Khulna, Bangladesh owned by the Government of Bangladesh under the Ministry of Defence and managed by the Bangladesh Navy. The shipyard is responsible for ship building, making steel structures, civil works and other manufacturing jobs. The visiting team was welcomed by the high officials of Khulna Shipyard Ltd. The students along with the faculty members and the officials from Khulna Shipyard Ltd had an introductory session about the history, development and purpose of the shipyard. After having refreshments, the students visited the workshops of Khulna Shipyard Ltd notably Platter Shop, Carpentry shop, Civil Section, Machine Shop. Electrical shop, Foundry Shop and Docking Section. The officials from the shipyard explained the various works which are done inside the shipyard. Enthusiastic students asked questions and gathered knowledge in various fields of engineering. They were delighted to witness the first war ships BNS DURGAM and NISHAN which were built in Bangladesh.
The next part of the tour was the visit to Orion Power Rupsha Ltd., a privately-owned commercial power plant located in Lobonchora, Khulna. ORION, one of the country’s leading industrial conglomerates, has developed a 105 MW power plant, which operates on six Wärtsilä-50 engines running on heavy fuel oil (HFO). Mr. Bijoy Roy Chowdhury, Senior Assistant Engineer of Orion Power Rupsha Ltd also the alumnus of Department of EEE, IUB gave a warm welcome to the team from IUB. The students were divided into two groups and Mr. Bijoy and his team guided the students to the different sections of the power plant. The students got to learn about the heavy fuel oil storage system, water purification, electricity generation and distribution, protective components in power plants, switch yards, control room and many other useful stuffs. The whole visit was an interactive one where the higher officials gave their remarks on the visit from IUB students and also shared their experiences about working in the power plant. Later, group photos were taken to capture the memories of the tour.
The industrial tour was full of valuable learnings and a real life experience for the students. During the four day long tour, the students got the chance to stay in RRF Training & Resource Centre (TARC) in Jessore and also they had the chance to pay tribute to the great Bengali poet Michael Madhusudan Dutt by visiting his birthplace in Sagordari, a village in Keshabpur Upazila, Jessore District.
