The IEEE Vehicular Technology Society
National Capital Chapter
Invites you to our monthly lunch meeting
Tuesday, May 14, 2019

Winner of the IEEE Northern Virginia Chapter of the Year 2017

Andrew Long will provide an understanding of why wheelslide protection systems (WSP) are implemented in rail vehicles and why they serve as more than just an “Anti-flat” system to protect wheels. The attendee will also gain an understanding of how WSP systems provide operational benefit to rail system operators. As a foundation for the description of WSP system operation, typical system and component designs for pneumatic and hydraulic brake systems applied to rail vehicles ranging from streetcars to High-Speed trains will be described.

The functionality of a typical friction brake WSP system along with standard integration schemes with electro-dynamic brakes will be discussed along with an extension of the application of WSP to braking modes traditionally not WSP protected will be presented. In conjunction with brake mode application discussions, the safety aspects of the systems applied to current rail vehicles will be addressed. To provide the viewer a window into how systems are specified and validated, the presentation will contain information related to typical specification requirements and practical test processes for confirmation of system performance including integrating aspects of European homologation standards.

Finally, to provide a small glimpse into the future, next steps in the evolution of Friction brake WSP control to improve performance under varied rail conditions will be presented.
