Dr. Sandeep Anand, who is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering, IIT Kanpur and the Chairman of executive committee of PES-IAS Joint Chapter UP Section, delivered an expert lecture on the topic “GaN based high frequency compact DC-DC converter”.

In the end, Dr. M Aslam Husain thanks to Dr. Sandeep Anand for delivering such a nice lecture.

Title of the lecture: GaN based high frequency compact DC-DC converter

Abstract of lecture– Low voltage dc distribution systems found in modern space and aeronautical applications, supply power to many critical electronic loads, often times employing the use of single-input, multi-output converters. Key challenges present in such systems is the voltage step-down necessary to drive low voltage, high current loads, and wide input voltage ranges. Many of these applications are also constricted by size and weight. Gallium Nitride (GaN), a member of the wide bandgap semiconductor family, is a state of the art enabling technology with a high figure of merit compared to traditional silicon devices making it possible to increase converter system efficiency and reduce system size.

This presentation would focus on increasing the power density of dc-dc converters. It would start with the basics of high gain dc-dc converters and GaN High-Electron-Mobility Transistor (HEMT). Topics related to circuit topologies, efficiency and power density would be discussed. The solutions to some of the problems, found at Power Electronics for Renewable Integration (PERI) Lab, at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur, India, would be presented. Joint projects carried out with the participation of various Industries in this area, would also be discussed
