Hear, here! Justice For All: Humanitarian Activities, and Awards Event Celebrating Our History: Inventing Our Future

HAC is pleased to confirm that it would like to provide some support to Hear, here! Justice For All: Humanitarian Activities, and Awards Event Celebrating Our History: Inventing Our Future” (#19-EC1-26)

Made possible by IEEE-USA funding from member dues.

Meet and Greet and Eat. Celebrate and discuss the IEEE Humanitarian Activities and Mock Trial Team Achievements. Discuss the significance of Humanitarian activities in our society and around the world. Learn about the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, and how Advancing Technology for Humanity can reduce disparity for those with Hearing Loss. Our project has involved exploring issues of how hearing loss impacts people in their lives; we gather inspiration from the History and enduring legacy of Alexander Graham Bell and his wife Mabel Gardiner Hubbard Bell who together dedicated their lives to Advancing Technology for Humanity.

At this Event, you will meet the Mock Trial Team, many of our Advisors, and a variety of Stakeholders in the Justice System and in the Community. Hear from Judges, Attorneys, students, advisors, mock trial participants and others about their experiences. Enjoy a meal. Tell a story. Listen to a story.

From the U.S. Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Statistics Special Report on Disabilities Among Prison and Jail Inmates, 2011-2012:

"...disability types: hearing, vision, cognitive, ambulatory, self-care, and independent living.„ An estimated 32% of prisoners and 40% of jail inmates reported having at least one disability.„ Prisoners were nearly 3 times more likely and jail inmates were more than 4 times more likely than the general population to report having at least one disability."

Communications issues can lead to less Quality Education, fewer opportunities in the Economy, and can increase consequences of poverty including poor health and the impact of crime, which is multi-faceted. Even in Court, where people should be heard, professionals might not be aware they must provide accommodations. Costs can be Onerous for all the interactions among citizens, attorneys, witnesses, family, experts, government, Judges, etc. It can be very challenging just to identify resources that are available for accommodation, and in some places including jails, accommodations might not be available. Many people just give up, fail to request accommodation or they might not be aware they require accommodation, and then they plead to some crime or other (90% defendants take a plea rather than going to trial), resulting in going to jail or prison, where things will get worse.

We have focused on raising awareness, listening to Stories, and investigating how innovative technologies can reduce disparities while providing access to the Justice System. We have been following the Mock Trial Team through their seasons, interacting with Attorneys, Judges, County Clerk, and others to gain greater understanding. Join us at Joe and Joe's Restaurant for Dinner, Discussion, Stories, Trivia, Photo and Video Booth. Hear, here! Humanitarian Activities - Hear, here! Justice For All

Moderators and Organizers, Margaret J Lyons, PE and Kit August, PhD, Avi Hauser, PhD, Derek Davis, Esq., Eamon Wall, Esq., Dr Duncan Rogers Lee, Esq. Graham Casanova Alig, Patent Agent, and others will speak. Many members of our team will present their experiences and share the achievements. We will review the Stories, the technical activities, and the outcomes of the project so far. Humanitarian Activities make a difference in how people experience their lives -- for those in need, and for those who serve. Our IEEE PACE project paved the way for a new IEEE NJ Coast Section Special Interest Group in Humanitarian Activities (SIGHT) Group. We focus on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals:

Goal 3, ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages;

Goal 4, ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all;

Goal 5, achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls;

Goal 9, build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and foster innovation;

Goal 10, reduce inequality within and among countries;

Goal 16, promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, provide access to justice for all and build effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels:

We employ Storytelling and Connector techniques to raise awareness for our Volunteers and the Community;

https://www.un.org/press/en/2019/envdev1942.doc.htm .

In this project, we investigated how hearing loss creates disparity in the Justice System. We worked with a Mock Trial Team to see how activities in the courtroom might result in disparity for those with hearing loss. The Mock Trial process permits our Volunteers to attend a court proceeding without compromising privacy of a real case. Our Volunteers worked with Attorneys, Mock Trial Team Members, Stakeholders, Advisors, and others to record, measure, research, prototype, and discuss issues facing members of our society who experience hearing loss and who have difficulty in the Justice System.

We will Celebrate the Justice for All project and achievements and share our Storytelling.
