News from Any Location To Anywhere in the World - the Electronic News Gathering Paradigm Shift
Al Kornak,
JVC Kenwood, Director of Broadcast Sales

Abstract - It used to be that a large truck with microwave dish antenna and extendable mast was an absolute necessity to cover a breaking news event. This was the normal mode for television Electronic News Gathering (ENG) for decades. Nowadays, with today’s digital technologies, a camera person with a light-weight camera on his or her shoulder can cover news from almost any location – sending the live video and audio to anywhere in the world. The camera person and reporter can even be on foot in order to get to the remote scene of the breaking news story. Not only have the cameras changed, but the transmission systems behind the cameras have gone through a renaissance of their own. Modems operating in the 4G / LTE cellular frequency bands now bridge that connection between the camera and the TV station master control. At this technical presentation, we will describe the methodology behind the “connected cam” ENG system that is now in widespread and successful use by television broadcasters in the US.
