On 27 June 2017, Maersk was hit as part of a global cyber-attack named Petya, which compromised IT systems across multiple sites and business units, including Maersk Oil, Drilling, Tanker and Supply Services. The overall cost of the incident was estimated to be USD 250-300M due to lost business, making this one of the most devastating cyber-attacks to date. The same attack also brought to a halt hospitals, airports, banks and power companies.
In recent years, sensors have been being installed on board ships to help gain insights from the vast amounts of data obtained. This only exacerbates the need for a stricter cyber safety culture and solutions, as the maritime industry becomes increasingly dependent on IT systems.
The NAOME Forum is excited to present the second workshop in our series: “Cybersecurity and Marine Big Data”. This lecture is a chance for you to immerse yourself in an aspect of the maritime industry you had perhaps not previously considered. We encourage you to bring your questions and curiosity to this forum. Even if you don’t have any experience with cybersecurity and big data, we invite you to come and discover it with us.
