"Learning Paradigms for Outcome Based Education in Digital Era"
Abstract:
Educational outcomes of an engineering graduate coming out of an academic program is continuously changing with time and they are much more significant in the context of explosion of information technologies. Developing higher order thinking skills and inculcate the skill of life long learning are recognized as the most sought after educational outcomes. Developing higher order thinking skills in a heterogeneous group of students in a class is a challenging task for teacher in a learner centric environment. This talk covers basics of the nuances of learning paradigms, teaching for learning outcomes, usage of ICT tools and experiential learning as part of teaching process that can help in the development of higher order thinking skills.

Speaker Profile:
Prof.D.V.S.S.Siva Sarma is Professor of Electrical Engineering at NIT Warangal. He is currently serving as Dean(Faculty) at NITW. He has been the active volunteer of IEEE for long years. He served the IEEE Hyderabad Section in various capacities such as Student Activity Chair, Chair-PES/IAS/PELS Joint Chapter etc. He is currently the Chair –Education Society Chapter of IEEE Hyderabad Section.
His areas of research includes Signal Processing and Machine learning applications in Power Systems, Power Quality, Transient effects on motor insulation, Wide Area Monitoring and Protection, Grid Integration of renewable energy sources. He has delivered several lectures on Pedagogical skills for teachers in Higher Education.

Agenda
Department of Electronics and Communication in collaboration with IEEE Education Society conducted a half day workshop on ""Learning Paradigms for Outcome Based Education in Digital Era" on Saturday, 30 November 2019 in Seminar Hall, Block IV, MJCET from 10.00AM to 1.00 PM. The speaker of this workshop was Prof. DVSS Siva Sarma, Professor, NIT Warangal.
The workshop began with a formal welcome by Head of the department, Prof. Arifuddin Sohel followed by introduction of the speaker by Ms. Salma Fauzia. The speaker stressed upon giving attention to the academics and pedagogical aspects of implementation. The speaker and faculty members discussed collaboratively on the different methodologies that can be used in the process of teaching and learning.
The speaker emphasized that the role of a teacher is very limited in societal changes and hence a teacher should be more relevant and that technology in this digital era and teaching-learning should go hand in hand. A teacher should understand how a learner learns. The speaker introduced a platform for creating digital content by teachers to explain certain subject topics- Edmodo
The session was very interactive with many anecdotes from the faculty members from their experiences. The participants gave a very enthusiastic response and engaged in lively and deep discussion with the speaker. There were 55 participants in this session of which 8 were IEEE members.
