Dear Colleague,

The R1 Leadership was pleasantly surprised that the first R1 Evening Course on Project Management was filled to capacity within 6hrs of the very first email notification.  You have sent us a very clear message as we all struggle to get through the Covid-19 crisis. 

We have all watched daily with concern as the incidence of COVID-19 steadily increases around the world, in the U.S., and here within Region 1. We know that social distancing is effective in slowing down the spread of a disease, thus allowing our healthcare system to continue to deliver care. It was clear that many of the numerous events within the Region 1 Sections were going to have to be postponed or cancelled to support the efforts of our community to help confront the COVID-19 crisis.  

We sought to provide virtual courses and seminars to bring our community together in this crisis. We will continue to deliver more content like this in the near future.  Please contact us, if you are interested in providing a virtual seminar or short course to the Region 1 IEEE community.   With your help, we will all get through this together!

Objective and Contents:

This course is designed to help business and engineering practitioners and students understand some of the greatest challenges that organizations face today – the effective and efficient methods for implementing projects in organizations.  Project management, referred to by Fortune magazine as the #1 career choice for the coming decade, represents a skill that is in high demand by all companies, both domestic and international.  This course will provide a comprehensive overview of the skills needed and challenges to be faced in managing projects in organizations.

The course is divided into 14 modules, comprising a series of major topic areas relating to different elements of project management.  After developing a sense of the strategic overview of project management, we will begin analyzing various components of project management such as project selection, planning, organizing, and project control.  The goal is to shape the course to approximate the elements of project management and the challenges faced chronologically; that is, first considering how to plan the project and then, how to effectively run the project. The remainder of the course concentrates on making use of the theories by developing analytical and interpersonal skills in the students that will be useful to them as project managers.

This is an intensive seminar that will attempt to cover approximately one semester of material in 12 lectures.  As such, the course will run from 8:00 PM to approximately 9:00 PM in the evening, twice a week.  

The lecture will be on-line and recorded. It is open to R1 IEEE members at no charge, although they will have to register to the course.  

This course is based on the PMBOK, however, it is not associated nor sponsored by the Project Management Institute and, as such, has not been approved as providing Professional  Development Units ( PDU’s).
