Despite the advent of a multitude of communication application on smartphones (e.g. WhatsApp, Messenger), texting is still the easiest and most widespread communication application that almost all people have access to and know how to use.

This webinar will provide an in-depth view of the Twilio SMS Service which provides an easy to use API to send, receive, and process text messages.

The presenter is Andrew Kostiuk with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Saskatchewan.

Two specific example services will be illustrated:

  1. A service to track students, researchers and staff as they enter and exit the University of Saskatchewan Engineering building, to help with contact tracing in case any personnel develop COVID-19.
  2. A community broadcast text service which allows broadcasting a text to many recipients by sending to a specific text number. The presenter lives on an acreage and this community broadcast text service has proven useful with notices of loose cattle on the road, lost dogs, and strange cars in the area.

Code samples will be displayed and will be available on request.

The webinar will be 2:30-3:30 pm on Wednesday June 17, 2020 using WebEx (https://usask.webex.com/meet/andrew.kostiuk).

A $40 door prize will be randomly drawn from those that register for the webinar and attend the webinar.  Register at https://events.vtools.ieee.org/m/231791
