5G Radio Access Network (RAN) evolution – a neutral view on the topic.
Prof David Soldani
The talk discusses the blueprint of the 5G radio access network (RAN), towards 2025 and beyond, and sheds light on business and innovation opportunities, technological evolution, performance and security assurance. Firstly, the five characteristics of the target RAN 2025, i.e. gigabit anywhere, ultra-automation, intelligent multi-cloud connection, differentiated experience, environmental harmony, are introduced. Then the evolution of the RAN architecture – implementation and disaggregation aspects, such as O-RAN, Open RAN, vRAN and classical configurations - and supported features are presented. This is followed by examples of use cases and deployment scenarios. Conclusions are drawn in terms of, but not limited to, the following: efficiency, performance, reliability and costs; standards; openness; operation, integration and management challenges; environmental impact; cyber security; green and sustainable deployment.
