The term "Smart cities" is used frequently to enhance the value of a new process or initiative announced by local or federal government and this is a welcome and acceptable activity to push the initiative along to another level as part of an overall plan for a smart city. The plans for smart cities as cited by many "Smartcity" related blogs or website initiatives might not tackle the fundamental question of "what is a smart city"? This presentation will touch on various aspects of a smart city, the "digital twin", "digital transformation targets" and what has been done to date and what needs to be done in the near future if one has to use the title of "Smartcity". The presenter will show using examples of what a smart city should provide and how some of these facilities are focused on reducing the "friction" in the daily activity in a smart city. Recent research findings presented at an recent international "virtual" conference will be presented and questions regarding how we take city objectives forward respecting individual city themes will be discussed. Studies presented at research at the Macquarie University and other resources at the IEEE (smartcities.ieee.org) will be touched on such as how cities can be "adopted" by research institutions to guide their progress into several important functional areas of city activity that emerge from research on what makes a smart city "smart"!
