Annual General Meeting
IEEE ProComm Society Student Branch Chapter of the University of Moratuwa is the first-ever IEEE ProComm Society Student Branch Chapter established in a Sri Lankan university and this was the first Annual General Meeting of the Student Branch Chapter. It was held virtually via Zoom on the 21st of March 2021 from 5.30 pm onwards with the participation of nearly 80 participants. The event started with an introduction to IEEE ProComm Society and the Student Branch Chapter. The current President of the IEEE Professional Communication Society Dr. Darina M. Slattery graced the occasion with her presence and spoke about the IEEE ProComm Society, what it does, what we can do for it, and how we can get involved in its activities. Furthermore, she appreciated the efforts of the IEEE Student Branch of the University of Moratuwa in establishing the first-ever IEEE ProComm Student Branch Chapter. After that, the Chief Advisor of the IEEE Student Chapter of the University of Moratuwa, Prof. Sisil Kumarawadu addressed the gathering highlighting the importance of professional communication in engineering. The next event was the election of office bearers. During that, the following office bearers were elected.

After the appointment of the office bearers, Dr. Ranga Rodrigo, the staff advisor, and senior treasurer of the IEEE ProComm Student Branch Chapter shared an interesting presentation on how to present effectively using gradient descent. Then the newly appointed chairman of the ProComm Student Branch Chapter, Amaya Dharmasiri did her speech explaining the board’s plans for the upcoming year. The meeting was concluded after the secretary, Dinithi Dissanayake, delivered the vote of thanks.

What ProComm can do for you, and what you can do for ProComm
An introduction was given to the IEEE, IEEE Professional Communication Society and IEEE ProComm Board of Governors. She explained the benefits of being a ProComm member and how student members can get involved in activities and make contributions. Dr. Darina also shared links for some useful resources. The session was concluded with an interesting Q and A session.
Biography:
Dr. Darina M. Slattery is the President of the IEEE Professional Communication Society and serving her second term as an elected member of the ProComm Board of Governors. She is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Limerick (UL) in Limerick, Ireland. Darina holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science, an MSc in Software Localization, and a Bachelor of Business Studies with a French Degree (UL). Her research interests include online learning/ e-learning, learning analytics, and virtual teams.
Prof. Sisil Kumarawadu
Importance of Professional Communication
The importance of Professional Communication was discussed in the aspects of undergraduates and Engineers.
Biography:
Prof. Sisil Kumarawadu is the chief advisor of the IEEE Student Chapter at the University of Moratuwa. He obtained his BSc in Electrical Engineering with 1st class Honors, from the University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka. He obtained his MEng. in Advanced Systems Control Engineering and PhD. in Robotics and Intelligent Systems from Saga National University, Japan. He has sole-authored 2 books and published 30 research papers internationally. He was also biographized in Marquis Who’s Who 25th Silver Anniversary Edition of Who’s Who in the World. He’s a Senior Professor in Electrical Engineering at the University of Moratuwa and a Distinguished Professor at the Shanghai University of Electric Power.
