On 29th June, 2021, IEEE BUBT Student Branch, IEEE Biometrics Council BUBT SB Chapter, IEEE Nanotechnology Council BUBT SB Chapter, and IEEE BUBT Sensors Council BUBT SB Chapter arranged an event about "MEMS and Microfluidics for Bio-applications".

The speaker of the event, Saakshi Dhanekar is an Assistant Professor, Department of Electrical Engineering, IIT Jodhpur, by profession. She is also chairing an IEEE Sensors chapter jointly with Delhi and Rajasthan. She has been awarded the IEEE Young Professional Hall of Fame Award in 2019 in Montreal.

The main reason of the webinar is to introduce about the topic "MEMS and Microfluidics for Bio-applications". It is a process technology used to create tiny integrated devices/systems that combine mechanical and electrical components which has the potential to revolutionize both industrial and consumer products by combining silicon-based microelectronics with micromachining technology. The speaker starts with the topic Micro-fabrication and what it is about. Then she discussed the use and significance of silicon. She also described about the "CZOCHRALSKI method". Then she briefly explained about Bio-sensors and Bio-chips for detection, Microorganisms, importance of Bio-MEMS, Microfluidics and many more. The fact that more than 90 people provided feedback on the webinar was a notable accomplishment. The webinar drew a total of 120 participants, with 15 of them being women. Participants in this virtual webinar had the opportunity to learn about these topics briefly and why it is important for future aspects. And also get a chance to know about Microfluidics, which has been an active research field and an indispensable tool for quantitative analyses of chemicals and biological specimens for decades.

Topic:

MEMS and Microfluidics for Bio-applications

Saakshi Dhanekar is working as Assistant Professor, at the Department of Electrical Engineering, IIT Jodhpur. Before this, she had worked as SERB Research Scientist and INSPIRE Faculty at Centre for Biomedical Engineering and Centre for Applied Research in Electronics (CARE), IIT Delhi respectively from 2013-2019 and as Assistant Professor at Amity Institute of Nanotechnology, Amity University, Noida from 2011-12. Her current research interests include the fabrication to prototype development of sensors for social causes, micro-fabrication, nanomaterials, MEMS, and semiconductor devices. She is on the Editorial Board of the IEEE Sensors Letters, Senior Member IEEE, and IEEE Ambassador, and YP Chair of the IEEE Sensors Council (2019–Present). She is chairing an IEEE Sensors chapter jointly with Delhi and Rajasthan. She has more than 40 research papers, few Indian and US patents filed, and one patent to her credit. One of her projects funded by BIRAC is for developing an Indigenous alcohol breath analyzer and she hopes to convert this into a startup. She has been awarded the IEEE Young Professional Hall of Fame Award in 2019 in Montreal and her team was awarded 1st position in the North zone in Tata Hackathon.
