Old and new business
- Magnetics chapter wants a NextGen bank account. This requires approval from the section, but is a departure from section policy on finance and accounting for chapters.
- Li-C Wang requests technical sponsorship of San Diego Section for ITC2024, and invites anyone that would like to attend the in-person site visit of the Hilton Bayfront in San Diego on 19-20 January 2024.
- Engineers Week (SDCEC) activities
- San Diego Section Awards Banquet plans
- Update about Rising Stars funding and any action item cleanup.
- Multiple requests for Senior Elevation assistance.
- EYH 2022 Invoice
- IEEE Foundation inactivity fees have been instituted. Forgive me for my ignorance, but I'd like to know why we couldn't have given money from this fund to something like the Guitar Amplifier program at SDSU. Or, why we can't do that, today.
From Larry:
There is a major need to develop impactful IEEE San Diego Section projects and activities that support
three local university IEEE Student Chapters, as well support science and math programs, fairs and
competitions in the K-12 schools within the San Diego area.
To support these scientific and educational programs it is necessary for the IEEE San Diego Section to
conduct fundraising programs. To seed the fund, held within the IEEE Foundation, the IEEE San Diego
Section requests a transfer of $20,000 from its operating surplus to challenge industry and
private/public donors to provide a matching contribution.
PROPOSED ACTION:
Resolved that the IEEE San Diego Section shall be authorized to transfer up to USD $20,000 of its
2013 operating surplus to the IEEE Foundation and be placed in the IEEE San Diego Section Fund.
Resolved further that the IEEE San Diego Section Executive Committee shall be authorized to
administer the IEEE San Diego Section Fund program and fund-raise in coordination with the IEEE
Development Office and IEEE Foundation, shall be approved.
FINANCIAL IMPLICATIONS:
The transfer of the seed money from IEEE San Diego Section to the Fund is the only financial
implication.
PROS:
Increased member and corporate participation in local projects which supports the objectives of the
IEEE by providing an easy means of making tax deductible donations.
Promote local public awareness and stature of the IEEE.
Provide support to local universities at the both the graduate and undergraduate levels.
Provide support for STEM related initiatives in the local K-12 schools
CONS:
We will miss opportunities to attract corporate participation and money for local IEEE projects.
We will miss the opportunity to seek and distribute funds from the IEEE San Diego Section Fund
